A beautiful vintage Japanese porcelain tea set featuring delicate hand-painted birds, flowers and foliage, finished with soft pastel shading and gilt details. The set includes three matching pieces: a teapot, covered sugar bowl and milk jug. Each piece is individually decorated with different bird and floral scenes, giving the service the character of a small collection rather than a repetitive factory pattern. The decoration is characteristic of Japanese export porcelain from the first half of the 20th century, with strong Kutani and Yokohama stylistic influence. Based on the form, decoration and construction, we believe the set most likely dates to approximately the 1930s–1940s. Each piece carries a small hand-painted orange mark to the base. This appears to be a decorator’s or artist’s mark; the individual workshop or manufacturer has not been conclusively identified. The teapot is particularly decorative, with painted birds among flowering branches, a softly shaded porcelain body, gilt detailing and a flower-shaped finial to the lid. The sugar bowl and milk jug continue the bird and botanical theme with their own individual scenes.
